Glasgow-based quartet Sixth Wonder dropped their first single of the year last week, the emotion-driven track called ‘Thorn‘. It comes after they solidified their ever-growing presence in metalcore with two standalone singles released in 2024.
The group has been together since 2021 and is often compared to the also female-fronted Spiritbox. Furthermore, they have grown a reputation for immersive storytelling as well as pushing the boundaries of the genres they explore. In this new single, the narrative draws on the band’s own lived experiences, something that adds a personal and meaningful touch to the track.
In addition, the performance music video the band dropped only contributes to this narrative-building presence. Directed by Joey Aitchison, it uses a small set to represent the themes within the track. The band’s sense of physical claustrophobia complements the emotional depth of the lyrics Rebekah Kirk sings.
The high-tempo drumbeat in the verses instantly reminded me of the French heavy metal band GOJIRA. However, I think the structure of the song, with a gentle opener and dynamic chorus, helps to set the single apart from its contemporaries. The themes of betrayal weaved into the lyrics clearly help to drive a sense of anger into the musicianship.
Sixth Wonder has already made waves amongst the metalcore community. With achievements such as winning Best Metal at 2023’s Scottish Alternative Music Awards already under their belt. After garnering over 500k views on TikTok, it’s clear the band is steadily building up the momentum they need to continue to grow.
