Tahn Solo Captivates with His New EP ‘Method Acting’ (Review)
Tahn Solo continues to carve a unique place for himself in the music scene. His latest EP, ‘Method Acting’, is a sensational example of this movement.
Tahn Solo – pronounced like Han Solo – continues to prove himself as a multifaceted artist. He demonstrates this with his unmatched love for wordplay and silky-smooth voice. This artist has outdone himself on his newest release, ‘Method Acting’. Admittedly, it is home to some of his best work yet. Additionally, the single ‘Closer’ encapsulates the feel of this project beautifully. Mixing sultry sounds with jazzy interludes, the production on this track alone speaks for the integrity of the entire EP. Meanwhile, tracks such as ‘I’m Good, I Swear’ echo more of a tale akin to R&B. Furthermore, its lyrics are hauntingly truthful, and honest. It’s a vulnerable listen with an honesty that carries immense bravery.
We had the pleasure of speaking with Tahn last year for our Purple List Interviews. I was lucky to learn more about his upcoming projects and how he finds inspiration for his art. In the same way, his latest release seems to host a lot of personal growth and even more nuanced means of storytelling. This is perfectly captured in the track ‘Atemporality’. Here, he speaks about an unknown character as if describing them to a friend. It speaks of letting go of his ego, flowing seamlessly into the next track: ‘Ego’. Undoubtedly, its sassy, brutal callouts allow us to see a deeper side of Tahn. He is standing up to negative talk, whilst blending backing vocals to sound like the crowd cheering him on in his much-needed confrontation.
This dialogue continues when Tahn offers a hand in ‘Oddy’s Interlude’. Although not as performative as the other tracks, this phone call-esque monologue feels deeply personal. It is as if you are intruding on an intimate moment. However, it acts as a sign, as if you had a guide from the universe that you are on the right path. It allows you to hear what most of us need to hear and to take away what resonates.
To close out this accumulation of feelings poured out into melodies, is the soulful ‘Love, Crafts Countries’. Moreover, this is a stand out on the project. The song gained traction after a live performance as well as it being his comeback in 2024. This is everything that Tahn’s music is about, mixing neo-soul and jazz along with a sprinkle of his individualistic escapades. As mentioned before, the production of ‘Method Acting’ takes it to a whole new level, working with Kente Kwame, a known jack of all trades. It proceeds to elevate Solo’s already fine-tuned sound. Where there are soulful beats and heavenly accompanying harmonies, there is little to no fault throughout this storybook of resonating tapestries. Although tracks like ‘Closer’ and ‘Hanafuda’ may feel more polished, a track like ‘Ego’ in its daringness and unembellished nature present a unique listening experience.
Altogether, this 9-track EP engages you as a soundtrack to any mood, for any venue. Further captivating you in his words, Tahn’s narration ability remains unmatched. Taking any chance to filter in the things that inspire him, this EP has become just that; an inspiration to others. After a successful listening party to commemorate, as well as features from BBC Introducing, it doesn’t seem like this buzz will be wearing off anytime soon.
