If Indie Folk music were a field, the current scene would be a daisy-filled meadow populated with caravans and logs. Over the last few years, a growing number of singer-songwriters have fused the familiar sounds of Americana and country with dips into pop and synth. This has led to a current boom in Indie Folk. A canvas once painted on by the likes of Neil Young and Joni Mitchell has now been reimagined into fascinating kaleidoscopes by MJ LendermanWaxahatchee, and Samia

Folk B***h Trio is a group from Melbourne, Australia, that does exactly as described on the tin. Gracie SinclairHeide Peverelle, and Jeanie Pilkington are friends who met in high school five years ago, and the chemistry built since that time has yielded some sweet chin music. Much like their name suggests, there is a sharpness to their quality of folk. It’s like Wilco meets Bonnie Raitt, but with a much more sardonic take on life.

Their debut album ‘Now Would Be A Good Time’ has just dropped, and the group spins some breathtaking yarns on it. Previous singles ‘God’s A Different Sword’ and ‘The Actor’ have planted the group firmly into the chatter of inner circles. Phoebe Bridgers described them as ‘boygenius if it was from the ’40s or something.’. Their swirling three-part harmonies are combined with poignant storytelling. This yields undeniably sublime moments that soar, swoon, and set your heart on fire.

Hotel TV’, the album’s latest single, continues all these traditions. However, there is a meditative entry point, as the song begins by evoking the loneliness of sleeping inside a nondescript room. With the gentle strumming of an acoustic guitar, Pilkington lends her voice and pens a story of the worst-case-scenario hotel experience. If you can imagine, that would be the constant drone of infomercials and a couple ‘banging’ too loudly next door. Together, the trio unveil their searching question in the melodic, somewhat bitter chorus, “Can I, get some rest?“.

The song slowly reveals that the central protagonist is musing about their partner and the aftermath of a failing relationship. As they sleep beside each other, they begin a dissociative reverie, musing, “‘Cause I lay beside him / In the night / And I had a filthy dream / To the noise of the hotel TV.”. In addition, as they repeat the final refrain, the vocal alchemy that the trio achieve is catharsis for all involved. It is death by a thousand cuts, with a mournful coda to die for.

Folk B***h Trio cast a hallucinative afterglow throughout the entire album. Every track serves as a snapshot of events filtered through a soft indie-rock haze. Essentially, they are like memories that return as ghosts later in life. Therefore, it’s no wonder indie label Jagjaguwar was so eager to add this trio to their repertoire. The Melbourne group joins stable heavyweights like Bon Iver and Sharon Van Etten. With a European tour soon to commence, the chance to hear this enchanting single live would be amazing. In conclusion, this group is a folk force to be reckoned with.
