Canadian singer-songwriter Jessie Reyez has released her latest track ‘PSILOCYBIN & DAISIES‘ which combines modern pop, nineties alternative, and R&B. She has released this track as the sixth single in preparation for her upcoming record ‘PAID IN MEMORIES‘.
An overarching stylistic choice on this record is the sample taken from ‘1979‘ by nineties alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins. The combination of more modern production qualities compared to Reyez’s vocal style elevates the sample. There’s a clear distinction between her track and the original that isn’t always achievable with sampling. This song combines a variety of influences, which helps it stand out as well as fit into today’s music sphere. Reyez’s abilities as a singer are reminiscent of soul and R&B artists in contrast to the polished pop production of ‘PSILOCYBIN & DAISIES‘.
When the track moves into the chorus, the drum beat feels powerful and brings solidity to the song. This counteracts the life and vibrancy of the powerful vocals. I also found myself drawn to the punchy bassline. It helped to change from its original tone to something distinctly by Reyez.
This single provides fans with more highly anticipated music as the date of her next record release looms. Her new album, ‘PAID IN MEMORIES‘ is due on 28 March. The first six teasers have certainly proved it to be a hit. It features a star-studded selection of guest artists from Ari Lennox to Lil Wayne. It’s her first album since ‘YESSIE‘ back in 2022. Since then, Reyez has been nominated for awards, opened for acts such as Billie Eilish, and featured on the soundtrack for the biopic Bob Marley: One Love.
