MOBO award-winning producer and DJ Juls is set to drop his latest EP ‘Com Amor Brazil‘ in a week. The project was inspired by a recent trip to Brazil, as well as the music and culture there. To celebrate that he has had an exhibition dedicated to Brazil in Brixton this week.

Taking place at The Department Store, it provides an insight into what makes the country and the music that comes out of it. This includes photos depicting the locals, some of its footballing greats, and references to Black Lives Matter. In particular, I enjoyed the football shirts including a Panathinaikos jersey and Cafu’s AC Milan top. This, for me, showed not only what was special about Brazil, but also its connection to the rest of the world.

There were also many instruments on display, some familiar like a Culca drum, others less so like the Berimbau. From samba and bossa nova to more modern examples like baile funk, this nation has a rich musical history created with these tools.

After purchasing a CD (support the artist) and sampling some punch, we headed to the cinema room to watch the documentary. Titled ‘Travelling Man: Com Amor Brazil‘ it provided an insight into Juls recent trip to Brazil for a gig. It also examined how Brazilian music had influenced his taste, the country’s connections to parts of Africa, such as Ghana and Nigeria, and how the trip impacted him. I certainly learnt some things from it and the artist himself showed he had from his trip.

As someone who is not overly familiar with Brazilian culture or its music, this was an insightful experience. I learnt a lot and as a historian was particularly interested in the country’s connections with other nations. This is definitely an exhibition you should see and tickets are still available for today and tomorrow. And, of course, don’t forget to listen to the music.

Juls is on Instagram, X, Threads, and TikTok. You can find tickets for the event here and read more event reviews. Don’t forget to pre-save the new EP.
