Current indie staple Wet Leg has released their latest track, ‘CPR‘, along with a music video. The group, which was founded on the Isle of Wight, shot to fame with their catchy debut solo ‘Chaise Lounge‘ back in 2021. They managed to continue their success with their self-titled debut album. It pulled from influences such as PJ Harvey, Bombay Bicycle Club, and The White Stripes.
This latest single is the opening track for the next release, ‘moisturizer‘, due 11th July. The band’s second record furthers the promise of continuing their ever-growing legacy within modern indie rock. I certainly noted Rhian Teasdale‘s vocals, which are quite dry and matter-of-fact. For their soundscape, I think this works perfectly as a lot of their current counterparts strive to achieve the opposite effect.
The lyrics are reminiscent of a love song. However, the visuals of trying to see someone through the method of CPR are concrete and blunt. It furthermore works well as a fun narrative that can take a fresh spin on an often overdone theme.
As for the music video, it pulls further into this unusual method of storytelling that the band strives for. The group directed it themselves, and they clearly intended their on-screen vision to purposefully enrich the lyricism. It is simplistic; the band is driving together and enjoying their own track. However, it is aesthetic, and I enjoyed the way it doesn’t look for over-the-top dramatics or creating an additional narrative to the song itself. It’s a great way to build upon the sound without interfering with it.
As well as this new track, ‘catch these fists‘ was the first single released for the upcoming album. Along with ‘CPR‘ to accompany it, there is no doubt the band still has something unique about them that stands out within current, modern indie rock.
