Megadeth Continue Their Thrash Legacy with ‘I Don’t Care’

Thrash legends Megadeth have just dropped their second single off their upcoming self-titled album. ‘I Don’t Care‘ delivers everything that you’d hope for from a band that has provided incredible riffs and high energy since their 1985 debut. The band formed in LA back in 1983, and has since released sixteen incredible albums.

Teemu Mäntysaari is exceptional on lead guitar in this new track. Whilst the lead guitarist has changed multiple times throughout Megadeth’s history, all have been consistently strong players. There’s a reason that so many guitarists love this band, and to see them continue this legacy is great. Drummer Dirk Verbeuren is also an impressive asset to the band. His fast pace and hard drumming helps maintain the powerful energy throughout.

There has been some criticism for the repetitive vocals, however I think it works. I don’t think the lyricism is bad. The words deliver a message that has been prevalent in metal since its conception. I didn’t go into this track looking for something poetic and profound. As a genre, Thrash has a big focus on pace and instrumentation, and that is evident in this single.

Dave Mustaine and his band have forever been compared to Metallica because of their early collaborations with them. It’s about time people stop the comparisons and recognise Megadeth in their own right, for the great back catalogue they have that has absolutely defined thrash. Moreover, their influence on a variation of other metal genres that have since followed. From ‘Sweating Bullets‘ to ‘Hangar 18,’ their music has played a massive part of music history.

The Big Four

Mustaine has one of the most distinct voices in metal. To come back from throat cancer and continue to play both live and in the studio is commendable. One of the defining features of Megadeth is its snarling vocal performance. I think his style works extremely well for a genre that is defined by grit and aggression.

Their upcoming album will sadly be their final record, accompanied by a final tour. The LP is due on the 23rd of January, and expectations are high. I expect the band will go out with a bang. They’ve already announced several dates on the festival circuit, including Graspop Metal Meeting and Sonic Temple Festival. With both this latest single release and ‘Tipping Point‘ being vibrant songs, fans can only expect a final classic from one of the ‘big four’ of thrash metal.
